WELCOME to the Sacramento Sheriff’s Museum, Bruce Verhoeven Foundation Gallery. Established in 2014, we are proud to tell the story of one of the leading law enforcement agencies in the nation. Our proud heritage began in April of 1850 when the Board of Commissioners established a county
government and our first Sheriff was elected. Much has changed in over 160 years – from horses to helicopters to advanced technology. The tools of the trade in this 21st Century would not have been imagined by those early pioneers. We hope you enjoy your visit to our website as you learn more about the heart and essence of law enforcement - its people.
The office of Sheriff dates back to the 12th Century. Our forefathers brought this authority to the New World and the first Sheriff was elected in Virginia in 1651. Fast forward 200 years, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill and as the word spread thousands of people rushed west to make their fortunes.
The La Grange, Sacramento's first land-locked jail located on the Sacramento River. This jail was used until 1860 when it sank during a violent winter storm.
The Sacramento Sheriff’s Museum began with funding from the Bruce Verhoeven Foundation. Take some time to view our Virtual Tour and purchase souvenirs or make a monetary donation. Help us keep teaching future generations about the History of the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department!
